Sound Walk- On a Pretty Nice Day

As I walked I heard the jumbled voices of those around me. Listening more closely I noticed the sounds of birds singing above my head and the cars passing next to me. I heard the loud hissing and rumbling of the Q12 as it passed beside me. Moving on I noticed the sound of the bell on the door of a deli, it could probably have used some WD40 too since it made a considerably loud creaking noise as well. A group of men stood on the side of the building drinking beer while talking to each other but my Spanish wasn’t strong enough to fully understand what they were talking about. The conversations on the train went more of the same way. Lots of voices speaking in different languages all jumbled together in this one train-car, it sounded like home. The rumbling of it’s  wheels rolling down the tracks hummed throughout my body as I sat back. Hearing the sound of the train stopping at my station I exited the train as the sound of a glass bottle being kicked echoed down the platform. As I approached the park the screams of excited kids enjoying some long awaited warm weather filled the air as the wind blew steadily into my ears. The shouts of several groups of people playing soccer hit me as I went deeper in. As I found myself waiting for the train once again I took notice of someone playing a Lil Jon on their speaker this time. Not much further down the platform I heard a woman make a comment to what I assumed to be her child about playing music aloud on public transportation being rude. As I approached home my neighbors voice called out to me saying “hi” while one of the neighborhood cats sat and cried for attention at her feet.

  1. Justin - beautiful reflection! I loved your descriptions of not just sounds but how they resonated in your body, how you 'felt' them. Marked as complete!
